A German study found that indoor rock climbing is safer than badminton, indoor sports, and much safer than contact sports. However, climbing can be dangerous if performed carelessly.
What type of workout is bouldering?
Bouldering is an excellent cardio workout that also involves nearly your whole body's musculature. Heart rate and energy expenditure levels of climbers while climbing on an indoor wall were similar to running at a moderate pace of between eight and 11 minutes per mile. While traditional cardio sports like runny, cycling or traditional gym workouts rely on repetitive motions—climbing is a more complex movement, so the work you ask your muscles to perform during a climb changes each time you exercise. This kind of dynamic muscle activation is more challenging and fatiguing than simpler, repetitive movements.
How will bouldering actually help my kids?
In addition to the health benefits, climbing teaches valuable life skills - instilling focus, balance, determination and self-efficacy. The process of overcoming your own fears helps put life's other challenges into perspective.
